Introduction

“Green” programs are those which support a healthy and responsible approach to environmental integrity, economic prosperity and social equity.  Such programs in academics, research, engagement, and campus operations have been a part of the UNC Chapel Hill campus for years.

Over time, a plethora of logos and slogans have been developed and used by individual departments to identify and communicate their respective “green” programs or accomplishments.  While these brands have been valuable in helping create unique identities for the individual departments or programs which they represent, it is also important to have a brand that represents university-wide, interdepartmental “green” efforts.  This will assist the University in identifying and communicating those “green” programs and groups that work across the traditional departmental lines.

The “Carolina Green” logo (Tar Heel with Leaf) and verbiage was developed to serve as the university-wide brand for programs, products, and accomplishments that are interdepartmental.  The branding effort was lead by the Offices of Sustainability and Waste Reduction & Recycling in the Facilities Services Department, in collaboration with the Carolina Green committee, the Student Government Environmental Affairs Committee and the Institute for the Environment.

To maintain the high standard of the “Carolina Green” brand and guard against “green washing,” strict brand standards have been set in this document.  All inquires or requests regarding usage of the Carolina Green brand must be directed to the UNC Sustainability Office. Email: sustainability [at] facility.unc.edu
