Battery Recycling!

The Department of Environment, Health, and Safety urges students to recycle all used batteries in their respective area dorm offices. We accept all types of batteries including nickel-cadmium, nickel-iron, nickel metal hydride, lithium iron, alkaline, and mercury-free zinc carbon batteries. Batteries are not biodegradable and once in landfills can greatly affect soil and water quality as chemicals seep from used batteries into the soil and groundwater. Recycled batteries are taken to local facilities, where all parts of the batteries (plastics, metals, and acids) are separated and fully recycled. Recycling batteries is a great way to help preserve resources, protect the integrity of soil and water, and earn Green Games Points!!!

At the end of each semester, a representative from EHS will come and collect batteries from each dorm community. The battery bins will be weighed and the numbers will be divided by the number of individuals living in the dorm. The community with the largest percentage of battery recyling per capita wins and will receive an extra 200 Green Games points!!!

 Nike Reuse-A-Shoe

At the end of spring semester 2009 UNC joined forces with Nike to promote Nike's new environmental initiative Nike Reuse-a-Shoe. The premise of the program is simple: you play hard in your sneakers until you wear them out, you drop them in the nearest Nike Reuse-a-Shoe bin once they are worn out and we will ship the shoes back to Nike so that they can be recycled into playgrounds and athletic courts in low-income neighborhoods. And the best part is that the shoes do NOT have to be Nike products; you can recycle any brand of tennis shoes.

What does this have to do with Residential Green Games? There is one bin located in each dorm community. Keep track of how many pairs of recycled tennis shoes are collected in your community throughout the competition and we will award your community 5 Green Games points per pair of shoes. This is a great way to multitask-- earn Green Games points while making the world a better place to play!
